Tom and Deb Coyte of Sunset Beach, N.C., owners of Houses of Distinction, Inc., are committed to professional service, customer satisfaction and exceeding the standard of quality with a personal touch. They care about their client’s opinions and are determined to give them what they want.
Tom was born in Boston, Mass., one of eight children. Deb was born in Greenville, S.C., the older of two daughters. They have been married for 16 years and have no children.
Tom has always been in heavy construction, civil engineering and at one time built bridges. He enjoys golfing, cooking and getting feed back from his customers.
Deb is a graduate of the North Carolina State University College of Design with a degree in graphics and interior design. She enjoys golfing and gardening. She was a swimmer, missing the Olympic trials by 1/100 of a second!
Tom and Deb love vacationing on the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John.

Building standards are above code, even when not required by the home design. They recommend upgrades to provide the home owner with a better built structure, interior finish and mechanically superior home.
ENGINEERED FRAMING AND ROOFING: They have increased the standards used by many local builders. Every house built is framed uniquely to its specific design and engineered to accommodate special features.
SUB FLOORS: They believe it is critical to increase sub flooring standards to provide a solid floor with little or no movement, to eliminate buckling or warping and to prevent moisture from infiltrating the finished floors due to the climate of the area.
CRAWLSPACES: If the house was designed with a crawlspace, they use several techniques to improve the quality of the space, such as full treatment of the entire area with a mold preventative spray, installation of a polyethylene vapor barrier and installation of a dehumidifier. All of these reduce humidity. Without humidity, mold cannot grow. The techniques they use were recently recognized by the industry. The U.S. Home Protect Organization presented Houses of Distinction, Inc. with the Certified Mold Conscious Builder Award. Other builders have used terms such as encapsulation, however, complete encapsulation is only required if there is standing water or water draining continually under your crawlspace.
QUALITY FEATURES STANDARD IN ALL OUR HOMES: All exterior and interior walls in the house, as well as the garage walls, are insulated with batt insulation. None is blown in. This increased standard provides for energy savings throughout the year and more evenly distributes temperatures in the home. Interior wall insulation will also provide you with a much quieter house.
All ceilings have 5/8” sheetrock, not 1/2” used by other builders. This allows for a smooth finished ceiling with less deflection.
RELATIONSHIPS AND REFERENCES: They employ and have a long-term relationship with all their subcontractors and suppliers. Superior relationships ultimately benefit the home owners through lower prices and excellent, timely service. Their subcontractors and suppliers work together to ensure there are no unexpected issues during construction and create a consistent, excellent product.
